Effective Ways to Get Permission to 'Sell' Your Services

September 15th, 2008 by Sue L Canfield

So you're trying to sell your services to someone you've just met at a networking group. You hand them your card and ask, "When can we set up an appointment so I can tell you about how my services can benefit your business?" The response? "Well, I'll keep your card on file in case I ever need your services." And you never hear from them again.

Now picture this. You've just met someone new at a networking group. You ask them, "What do you do?" They reply. You then ask another question to find out more about what they do. You might say, "I'd like to learn more about who your ideal client is so I know who best to refer to you." Now you've got their attention. You are showing an interest in what they do and have indicated that you will refer people to them.

You didn't get to speak with each person at the networking event but collected several cards. Try calling one or two people that you want in your network and ask them if they'd like to meet for coffee so you can learn more about their business. Once you've developed a relationship, then you can tell them about your business and feel more comfortable asking permission to 'sell' to them.

Here's another scenario. You've just spoken to a group. You want everyone to sign up for your email newsletter. You end by saying, "There's a sign up sheet at the back of the room. If you'd like to receive my free email newsletter, just sign up with your name and email and I'll send it to you." Out of 20 people, you get three sign ups.

Instead, try this. At the end of your speech you hold up an report and say, "I have a free three-page report that covers much of the material we discussed today as well as ten tips on....Who would like a copy?" Once you get a show of hands you say, "Great! Please give me your business cards and I'll send you the article as well as a complimentary subscription to my monthly newsletter." All of a sudden you have 15 new subscribers.

What ways can you think of to effectively get permission to sell your services? Your comments will be posted here.
